BRAIN STROKE TREATMENT

Brain Stroke

When the blood supply to the brain is stopped either due to a blockage in the artery supplying blood to the brain or a rupture in the artery, the condition is called brain stroke. There are two types of brain strokes - Ischemic and Haemorrhagic. In Ischemic stroke a clot in the artery prevents the supply of blood to some part of the brain which results in partial paralysis of the body. In Haemorrhagic stroke an artery bursts and blood spills into the brain thus preventing the supply of blood to some part of the brain. The symptoms of both kinds of stroke is same which is paralyis or weakness on one side of the body. One side of the mouth becomes stiff and one side of the body both or either upper or lower limbs experience weakness. The patient in such a condition should be immediately rushed to a hospital which has the facility of MRI and services of a neurologist.

Diagnosis & Treatment

Brain Stroke can be diagnosed on a CT Scan after 2-3 hours of the incident while the same can be diagnosed on an MRI scan within 1 hour of the incident. MRI would be able to differentiate between the Ischemic and Haemorrhagic Stroke. In cases of Ischemic stroke a treatment called `Thrombolyis' is done. In this treatment special medicines are injected intravenously which busts the clot in the artery and restores the blood supply. This treatment should be given within 6 hours of the incident to be effective. In cases of Haemorrhagic stroke conservative treatment is given to remove the blood which has collected in the brain. This treatment is long and lasts for 1-2 years. During this period intensive phyiotherapy is given to restore the functions of the organs. High blood pressure is one of the reasons behind Haemorrhagic Stroke while obesity and heart disease are main reasons behind Ischemic Stroke. Patients above the age of 50 should get regular Carotid Doppler Study to see early signs of stroke.

Best Doctors and Lowest Cost

Stroke patients should be immediately rushed to a hospital where the facility of MRI is available and the services of Neurologist are also available. Better still the patient should be taken to a Stroke Centre because the facility of Thrombolysis would be available at the stroke centre. The cost of initial diagnosis is around Rs. 10000-15000 while the cost of thrombolyis is around Rs. 50000-70000. Stroke patients normally require hospitalization in the ICU for several days before they can be shifted to the wards. The typical expenditure in the ICU would be around Rs. 35000 - 50000 per day while the cost in the ward would be around Rs. 10000 per day. Post discharge phyiotherapy is going to cost around Rs. 20000 - 30000 for each month. The cost of stroke treatmetn is quite high and prevention is the best solution for avoiding stroke.
