The Blood Vessels which supply blood to the heart are prone to get blockages in them which results in a heart attack and in some cases causes instant death. These arteries are called Coronary Arteries. There are 3 major coronary arteries which develop blockages. The test to find out the blockages in the coronary arteries is called Coronary Angiography. If one or more arteries are found to have blockages in them during a coronary angiography exam then immediately a stent can be placed in those arteries to dilate them and restore the blood flow through the arteries. This procedure of placing the stent in the artery is called Coronary Angioplasty. If any coronary artery has more than 70% blockage then stenting is done in that artery. Stents can be placed in all the 3 arteries which will avoid the need for Heart Bypass Surgery in patients have Triple Vessel Disease.
Patients having blockages in 1-2 coronary arteries are ideal candidates for doing Coronary Angioplasty. If all the 3 major arteries are blocked (Triple Vessel Disease) then Heart Bypass Surgery is also an option. However if the patient is not fit for a major surgery like Coronary Artery Bypass Graft then also Coronary Angioplasty is the preferred choice. Angioplasty is a minimal invasive procedure as only a small incision is given either on the thigh or the wrist and is always preferred by the patients. Since the stent prices have come down it is also the cheaper option than a Bypass Surgery these days. The patient stays in Intensive Cardiac Care Unit for atleast 24 hours after the procedure where the Cardiac Team is constantly monitoring the progress of the patient and once all the vitals are normal then the patient is shifted to the ward.
