AV Fistula

Arteriovenous (AV) Fistula is an abnormal connection between the artery and the vein. Normally the blood flows from the arteries to the capillaries and then to the veins. The blood carries oxygen and glucose for the tissues of the body. For patients suffering from Kidney Failure regular dialyis is the option and in order to carry out Hemodialysis an artificial connection between the artery on the hand and the vein is created which is known as AV Fistula. Blood purification is done through this AV Fistula during Hemodialysis which is done atleast twice a week or even more in the Kidney Failure patients.

Surgery AV Fistula

If the dialysis is done through a vein then scarring may take place in the vein and damage it which means that after some dialysis another vein will have to be used. To avoid this an AV Fistula is created in the arm where the surgeon connects an artery to the vein. This increases the blood flow in the vein and dilates the vein which makes the process of dialysis easier through this dilated vein. Usually this AV Fistula is created on the forearm. Regular inspection of the AV Fistula and the surrounding area should be done by the surgeon.
