GALL BLADDER SURGERY

Gall Stones

Gall Stones are actual stones made of minerals which are found inside the Gall Bladder. Human Body needs all kinds of minerals but when some of the minerals are in excess and are not absorbed by the body then they get excreted from the body. One of the route for excretion is through the food channel via stool. Gall Bladder is a part of the digestive system and these minerals when they pass through the digestive system to get excreted, get accumulated in the gall bladder and form stones. These stones cannot be removed from the Gall Bladder as the mouth of the Gall Bladder is very narrow and no surgeon can enter inside the Gall Bladder to remove the stones.

Stones lying inside the Gall Bladder do not always cause problems and are not touched till there are any symptoms. In some patients the symptoms would be vomitting sensation, lack of hunger and pain in the upper abdomen. If the symptoms become severe then you should consult a surgeon who would get an ultrasound done on empty stomach to diagnose the problem. In some cases medicines help but for most of the cases the only solution is removal of Gall Bladder.

Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy

Since the Gall Stones cannot be removed from inside the Gall Bladder, the only option is to remove the Gall Bladder itself. The surgical procedure to remove Gall Bladder is called Cholecystectomy and most of the surgeons are adept at doing this surgery. However with the advent of Laparoscope, the best technique for removing the Gall Bladder is by doing it Laparoscopically. This procedure is called Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy. In this procedure, the surgeon will make 3 small incisions of less than 1 cm each and through one incision takes the surgical instruments inside the abdomen. The second incision is used to take the Laparoscope inside and the third incision is used to remove the Gall Bladder from the body. The surgery normally takes 20-30 minutes in the hands of experienced surgeons and the patient is back home the next day. The recovery in case of Laparoscopic surgery is much faster. After the surgery the patient is advised to take smaller meals more frequently rather than having large meals. Such a dietery pattern is great for achieving good health and keep lifestyle diseases at bay. So there is no harm to your health once the gall bladder has been removed.
